Singer, author, artist, event creator, producer and much more, Nicoletta has released an album in 2021, “Limbo Session 1” (Rizosfera) and several interesting collaborations including “Donnacirco” (AAVV La Tempesta Recs) and the more recent “She’s always been there” by Polychron Plus (Totem & Taboo distr. Materiali Sonori”).
QUESTION EA :: How did this new project LIMBO SESSION 1 come about and, above all, why?
ANSWER NN :: It came about as a response to a need I had to relate to the voice in space – without being on stage, thinking of the voice as an element of the sound flux, floating but present. I wanted to sing without being seen, to see the effect of my voice on people when they realise I was there, the emotion of the unique, unrepeatable moment. The Limbo Sessions are the result of an experiment that has its roots in the world of clubbing, coming from the years when I was curator of Morphine, the ‘liberated’ space inside the techno cathedral of Cocoricò in Riccione. A ‘fluxus’ place where I experienced the pleasure of improvisation as a game, in the console, between cymbals, voice and mixer, a succession of words that I intertwined with the vinyl, often at the opening of the evening. Then this experiment became more structured thanks to the artistic relationship with the resident DJ, David Love Calo, a virtuoso of musical architectures for environments, and then I also started inviting guest musicians who were always different to join me in these sessions that I called LIMBO SESSIONS. Over time, after Morphine, I ‘kept’ this module, this idea, developing it and grafting new electronic and electro-acoustic worlds, and I made it one of my live proposals. A concert of improvised music, which over the years has begun to be enriched with content, poetry, lyrics, hybridization, gathering many stimuli also from the experiences that my artistic career has taken me through. Why? Limbo Session, which began as a game is now very present … let’s just say that I got on well with it and here I am! The album Limbo session Vol. 1 co-created with Wang Inc. -an incredibly refined electronic producer of bold and soft experimentation, was born at the invitation of Rizosfera, brilliant, daring publishers, with whom we know each other from the times of the Maffia Illicit Music Club, under the pseudonym of AND I published with them in 2003 ‘Fashion Victims’ (Kom Fut Manifesto, 2003) and as Obsolete Capitalism & NicoNote ‘Chaos Variation V’ (Rizosfera, 2019) – the proposal was really surprising and welcomed with enthusiasm. Strictly recorded live, all the compositions on ‘Limbo Session Vol. 1’ are improvisational, a poetic body in motion, it was an interesting process to codify what I didn’t think was encodable. I like to think that Limbo Session is a practice similar to what is known as ‘total improvisation’, which is used by avant-garde jazz. You always look forward, you walk into the future while telling the present, pushing beyond it, without having the fear of error which, on the contrary, becomes an integral part of the composition.” (a suivre on Ernesto Assante’s blog article)
