25.05.2024 :: HACKATHON TRANSMEDIALE 2024 :: POLITECNICO TORINO :: ODRZ82 :: ORGANIZED BY DOMENICO MORREALE AND RIZOSFERA :: ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION WITH STEFANO GILARDINO, ROSA LA VITA, ODRZ, PAOLO BERTETTI, PAOLO DAVOLI (OBSOLETE CAPITALISM / RIZOSFERA)

Domenico Morreale (Lecturer at Politecnico Torino, Transmedia course) writes: “Here we are at the second Hackathon organized with Rizosfera in my Transmedia course – Collegio ICM at the Politecnico di Torino. This year, our project focuses on ODRZ 82, an artwork that captures and transforms the peculiarities of six artificial watercourses into sounds and rhythms. During this project marathon, our students will have the unique opportunity to create digital content that will enrich the experience of the artwork. This is not just an exercise but the creation of an experimental piece that will be freely distributed by Rizosfera and, transcending the physical boundaries of the classroom, will become a collective heritage. This is a unique experience for our students, allowing them to consolidate the skills learned during the course while contributing to producing culture for the community they live in. A huge thank you to ODRZ for embracing the proposal, and to the colleagues and friends who share our vision of learning: Enea Cinzia Rustichelli, Rosa Lavita, Stefano Gilardino, Paolo Bertetti, Elisa Roscelli, Massimo Odrz Mascheroni, Antonio Ant Odrz Maione.”

ODRZ82

The theme chosen for ODRZ82 fully reflects what is written in the ODRZ manifesto/presentation, specifically the part that states, “All spaces, structures, objects, and inhabitants of the world become – through appropriate artistic interventions – objects of sonification.” There are no other implications beyond the pure documentation/transformation of a geographic/morphological aspect resulting from human intervention, attempting to transpose the most significant aspects of each canal into a sort of musical score. Some common elements, considered important for the project’s narrative, have been identified. Present in all the tracks are: water, national anthems, and male and female voices.

The transmedia project ODRZ82 consists of 6 tracks that sonify as many artificial navigable canals: Canal Du Midi (France), St. Lawrence Seaway (USA/Canada), Saimaa Canal (Finland), Kiel Canal (Germany), Grand Canal (China), Stalin Canal (Russia). The 6 videos reproduce an immersive experience through the canals in their sound, visual, and informational dimensions and include:

  • A previously unreleased live performance, recorded in a factory where ODRZ perform the tracks in an empty space, without an audience
  • Archival video footage related to the artificial canals
  • Two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of the canals

A previously unreleased video interview where ODRZ converse with music journalist Stefano Gilardino (Rolling Stone, Rock Sound…) and recount their first 23 years of activity.

ODRZ82 :: Group Statement on Project No. 82

The project involves the sonification of 6 artificial canals:

CANAL DU MIDI, France

STALIN CANAL, Russia

ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY, Canada and USA

SAIMAA CANAL, Finland and Russia

GRAND CANAL OF CHINA, China

KIEL CANAL, Germany

For each canal, we studied both the geographical and morphological aspects, as well as the solutions adopted by human intervention for their construction.

The creative part came to life with the identification of elements:

SPECIFIC to each canal: number of locks, tools used for construction, navigation direction, route characteristics (presence of a lake, a junction, linear or winding sections, wide or narrow stretches), number of ships present at an inauguration.

COMMON to all canals: water, national anthems, and male and female voices reciting phrases in the languages of the nations where the canals are located. We consider the common elements to be very important for the project’s narrative.

All these elements have been musically transposed, becoming a loop, a frequency, a motif, or an identifying sound.
